PSA, a surrogate for prostate volume, translates into a risk factor for acute urinary retention. A serum PSA level below 1.3 ng/ml carries very little risk; however, a serum PSA level greater than 3.3 ng/ml carries with it a 4-year risk of AUR of 7.6%.
