5ARI drugs reduce the risk of acute urinary retention (AUR). The MTOPS study (Medical Therapy of Prostatic Symptoms) showed that compared to alpha-blockers, a 5ARI drug finasteride reduced the risk of AUR. Symptomatic relief was greatest with both drugs used together, but protection from BPH disease was primarily related to the 5ARI component.
